The Weekly Bake Off challenge this week was to make Mary Berry’s Divine Chocolate Birthday Cake, page 204, 100 Cakes and Bakes. I was initially very excited to have a go at this as I wanted to make a celebration cake for the weekend. Without any fat or flour in the cake itself I thought perhaps it could be a healthy option if served without the topping at other times. Mary Berry’s recipes are generally easy to follow and I followed it exactly but have found the cake to be a little dry. My topping doesn’t look shiny like hers did in the picture in the book so I have sprinkled grated chocolate over the top to make it look more appetising! Overall a bit disappointing and I think I prefer her Very Best Chocolate Fudge Cake and Devil’s Food Cake.
